Generation and release of high levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) produced unintentionally, makes Biomedical Waste dangerous and can spread infections. Source segregation is the crux of biomedical waste management, since only around 15% to 20% of waste is infectious in nature. The amount of medical waste generated in India is estimated at 250-400 grams per bed per day in a hospital and 200-300 grams per bed per day in a general medicine clinic (for example, a 100-bed hospital will generate around 40 kg of hospital waste / day).
